Surah Al-Ghaashiya — سُورَةُ الغَاشِيَةِ
The Overwhelming · 26 ayahs · Meccan · surah 88 of 114 · Listen, recited by Abdur-Rahman As-Sudais
هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَٰشِيَةِ ﴿1﴾
Hath there come unto thee tidings of the Overwhelming? (88:1)
وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَٰشِعَةٌ ﴿2﴾
On that day (many) faces will be downcast, (88:2)
Toiling, weary, (88:3)
تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةًۭ ﴿4﴾
Scorched by burning fire, (88:4)
تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍۢ ﴿5﴾
Drinking from a boiling spring, (88:5)
لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍۢ ﴿6﴾
No food for them save bitter thorn-fruit (88:6)
لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍۢ ﴿7﴾
Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger. (88:7)
وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ نَّاعِمَةٌۭ ﴿8﴾
In that day other faces will be calm, (88:8)
Glad for their effort past, (88:9)
In a high Garden (88:10)
لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَٰغِيَةًۭ ﴿11﴾
Where they hear no idle speech, (88:11)
فِيهَا عَيْنٌۭ جَارِيَةٌۭ ﴿12﴾
Wherein is a gushing spring, (88:12)
فِيهَا سُرُرٌۭ مَّرْفُوعَةٌۭ ﴿13﴾
Wherein are couches raised (88:13)
وَأَكْوَابٌۭ مَّوْضُوعَةٌۭ ﴿14﴾
And goblets set at hand (88:14)
And cushions ranged (88:15)
And silken carpets spread. (88:16)
أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ ﴿17﴾
Will they not regard the camels, how they are created? (88:17)
وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ ﴿18﴾
And the heaven, how it is raised? (88:18)
وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ ﴿19﴾
And the hills, how they are set up? (88:19)
وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ ﴿20﴾
And the earth, how it is spread? (88:20)
فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌۭ ﴿21﴾
Remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer, (88:21)
لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ ﴿22﴾
Thou art not at all a warder over them. (88:22)
إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ ﴿23﴾
But whoso is averse and disbelieveth, (88:23)
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ ﴿24﴾
Allah will punish him with direst punishment. (88:24)
إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ ﴿25﴾
Lo! unto Us is their return (88:25)
ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم ﴿26﴾
And Ours their reckoning. (88:26)
